A group of community based agencies, Hospitals and local businesses, have created the Alianza de Latinos Discapacitados- ALD (Alliance for Latinos with Disabilities.) This alliance will insure that all interests and needs of Latinos with disabilities in Nassau and Suffolk counties are met.

The mission of the ALD is to advocate for Latinos with all kind of disabilities in order to improve their quality of life within the community. Some of the issues that impact Latinos with disabilities also affect non-disable Latinos. ALD believes that coordinating efforts with others who work to make their communities a better environment will increase the possibilities of systemic changes. The Alliance’s primary purposes are:

-To represent the interests of Latinos with disabilities.
-To promote awareness about the issues affecting Latinos with disabilities among legislators, community based agencies, service providers, other coalitions and the general  public.
- To prepare Latinos with disabilities to embrace effective self-advocacy.

ALD meets once a month here at LICIL located at 3601 Hempstead Turnpike, Suite 208, Levittown NY 11787. You can become a member by calling Grisselle Rivera-Mucciolo at 516-796-6176.

On September 16, 2006, ALD conducted the first bilingual expo
“Expo for Independence” where more than 50 organizations and business exposed their services and goods to more than 400 participants. The expo was held at the Freeport Recreational Center and participants enjoyed a day full of information, Latin food, live music and entertainment and raffles.

On the month of May 2007 ALD conducted a series of workshops to prepare Latinos with disabilities to face the competitive world of the work force. We presented 5 topics: The First Impression, How to prepare a Resume, The Interview, Job Searching and How to work without losing your benefits. The workshops ended with the
LICIL JOB FAIR on June 14, 2007 where 15 employers came to interview and possibly hire people with disabilities.
