                  Long Island Center for
              Independent  Living, Inc.
Independent Living is attained by exerting control over one's life, based on acceptable options that minimize reliance on others in the decision making process and in performing daily activities. Managing individual affairs, participating in community life, fulfilling a range of social roles, making choices that lead to self-determination and minimizing psychological and physical dependence on others are all elements that contribute to reaching the goal of Independent Living.

LICIL was born out of the Independent Living Movement which took root in the 1960's and 1970's. A social philosophy that emphasizes personal responsibility in life, the Independent Living concept also affirms that environmental hurdles and outdated public opinions are the barriers that have long inhibited much needed service provisions for individuals with disabilities. Early on, LICIL assumed the role of catalyst to combat these issues and bring about much needed change to include persons with disabilities into the fabric of American life.

The Long Island Center for Independent Living is committed to the empowerment of consumers with disabilities. LICIL staff function as "ambassadors" to the belief that individuals with disabilities have a responsibility to take an active role in their own lives and a self-determined view of their futures.
